Christmas - Mary's Magnificat
Dec 20, 2020 • Luke 1:26-55
Luke 1 is the Christmas story from Mary’s point of view. It is Mary’s response to the angel’s visit. It is called Mary’s Magnificat, because of the first word in the Latin translation of Luke 1:46. “My soul magnifies the Lord,” she says. “Oh, how my soul praises the Lord. How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior! For he took notice of me, for he had regard for me” (Luke 1:46-48). Luke 1 is Mary’s prayer, Mary’s praise. We get to hear what was going through her mind after an angel told her that she would give birth to the Messiah. Two thousand years ago, Mary rejoiced that the Messiah would come through her. And today, we rejoice that the Messiah has come for us.
