Why would God demand that His Son die on the cross? It’s a valid question. Why such a violent act? Because the holy justice of God required punishment of sin, and the holy love of God desired forgiveness of sin. The cross is perhaps the clearest picture of God. His character includes both justice and mercy. He is both the judge who condemns us and the sacrifice who saves us. “In the cross of Christ God’s justice and love are simultaneously revealed.” The Gospel is a severe message. Our sin is severe, His sacrifice is severe, and His grace is severe. Thank God for His severe, lavish, amazing grace.
