What determines what you believe? Culture? Science? Opinion? The Bible? Each of these influence us in some way. But when it comes to theology, to what us believe about God, what influences us the most? Too often, cultural influences and personal opinion shape what we believe more than we realize. Too often people say, “In my opinion …” or “I can’t believe in a God who …” That’s theology by opinion. And it must be confronted. We must submit our thinking and our opinions to the word of God. Many things shape what we believe, but the Bible must have the final say.

With Easter a couple of weeks away, we are going to start our study of theology with Jesus. There’s no doubt that Jesus was an historical figure and a first century celebrity, but not everyone believes He was the Son of God. Philippians 2 is one of the clearest passages in the New Testament affirming who Jesus is.
